The Expat Mingle - 19th Nov 2009
Place : The George and Dragon
Blighty Nostalgia!
Friends and readers of The Expat enjoyed a treat last November when they descended on The George and Dragon in Bangsar Shopping Centre (BSC) for the monthly Mingle evening.
The George and Dragon is a charming outlet where families can enjoy a quiet Devonshire Tea on the terrace, friends can unwind over a few cocktails while watching the sun set in the west and sports enthusiasts can cheer on their teams over a few beers.
As such, guests at the Mingle had a fantastic time with the local fair and British pub grub such as spring rolls as well as beef and chicken pies. Our guests enjoyed two hours of free flow Tiger Beer courtesy of Guinness Anchor Berhad. Our wine partners Henry Martin Wines generously supplied us with the Henry Martin Cabernet Sauvignon and Alice White Chardonnay. In addition to the beverages, there was no shortage of food at the George and Dragon.
The friendly atmosphere reminded those from the UK of home and there was a sense of nostalgia in the air. Guests had fun mixing and mingling! The Mingle has become an event where expats make new friends and discover new places together.
If this sounds good to you, please join us at our next Mingle!

The Expat Mingle - 16th June 2009
Place : Chinoz on the Park KLCC
Mingling at Chinoz on the Park KLCC
In June our readers gathered at the classy and sophisticated Chinoz on the Park for a lovely Mingle evening. The view of the KLCC fountain and park made the setting even lovelier as guests eased in to comfortable conversation over food and drinks.
We had a great turnout of over 60 and goodie bags were handed out to the first 50 guests with vouchers for some of the popular stores in Suria KLCC such as Chinoz on the Park, Godiva Chocolates, DnT Salon, The Nail Parlour and Ang Eng Boutique. These were well received.
Many guests found this Mingle to be one of their favourites as everything seemed to fall into place. The space was lovely with cocktail tables for people to network and get to know each other as well as some regular dining tables for groups to get more intimate and better acquainted.
Chinoz served a delicious buffet spread with some of their signature thin crust wood oven pizzas, a melange of tapas and an array of desserts. These were happily polished off and no one left hungry.
For drinks, our wine partners Henry Martin Wines supplied us with the Red Hill Estate Shiraz/Cabernet/ Merlot 2006 and their own Henry Martin Chardonnay. Both wines paired well with the finger food that was offered. There weren’t only beverages for wine connoisseurs as beer drinkers were able to enjoy pitchers of ice cold Tiger as they mingled the evening away.
The mingle has become a place where expats make new friends in the city. One of our guests even commented that the first mingle was where she met her best friend. If you’re new in town, or you’ve been here a while and simply want to meet more people we would love to see you at our next mingle!

The Expat Mingle - 20th May 2009
Place : Social Changkat Bukit Bintang
Mingling at Social Changkat Bukit Bintang
A Social Night
The new Social in Changkat Bukit Bintang (CBB) housed our monthly Mingle in May. This hot new addition to the vibrant CBB scene was bursting at the seams with expats from all over the city stopping by for a drink, a chat, a nibble, and a whole lot of tango!
The Mingle was held in the upstairs bar area, decorated to be chic and yet welcoming at the same time. This area has a pool table along with a few screens playing the latest sports updates for avid fans.
Our 65 guests enjoyed a free flow of Tiger Beer and Sangria compliments of The Social, as well as a Red Hill Estate Shiraz/Cabernet/Merlot and an Intis Chardonnay/Chenin which was generously sponsored by our Mingle wine partner, Henry Martin Wines. In addition to the drinks there were some delicious nibbles such as finger sandwiches, fried dumplings, wedges and more.
For a very special Mingle treat we had a Tango Performance by Stephan Finzer, a divinely gifted Argentine Tango performer and his dance partner Sharie Dekorte one of the chief proponents of Argentine Tango and Salsa in Kuala Lumpur. Their sensual and delicate movements were well received by the guests with many wanting to find out how they could take classes with Stephan and Sharie at Havava Estudio (www.havanaestudio.com).
Another unusual treat for guests was the energetic DJ Domingo who started his set an hour early to be able to spin hot Latin beats for the Mingles crowd. The pulsating rhythms got everyone in the mood todance and many guests made their way to the dance floor to do a twirl. We even managed to catch Stephan and Sharie moving to the Salsa beat and showing us their expertise.
As usual the guests stayed on way past 9pm and thoroughly enjoyed their evening. We would like to thank our hosts The Social for the wonderful venue, food, and drinks, our wine partner Henry Martin Wines, our special performers Stephan Finzer and Sharie Dekorte, and the talented DJ Domingo.

The Expat Mingle - 23rd April 2008
Place : MarketPlace Restaurant & Lounge, Jalan Yap Kwan Seng
Mingling at Marketplace
April’s Mingle event was a success combining free flow drinks and a bunch of new faces. Many found their way to Marketplace restaurant on Lorong Yap Kwan Seng for a classy evening spent in the martini lounge and on the sky deck which offered a sparkling view of the Petronas towers.
As usual Marketplace delivered impeccable service; the waiters made frequent rounds with trays of mini tasty delights to snack on and the bartenders made sure that everyone was well taken care of. And what a thirsty group we had! The crowd of 60 managed to polish off a barrel of beer courtesy of Carlsberg and 18 bottles of wine, six of which were Hungarian wines generously sponsored by Infinity Ventures Sdn Bhd.
Marketplace’s regular saxophonist was present that night and his jazzy tunes were a perfect backdrop to the vibrant mingling taking place. The martini lounge was buzzing with conversation as new friendships were formed.
On their way out many guests expressed how much fun they had and some regulars commented that this was our best one yet. We’re glad that our efforts to improve and make each Mingle bigger and better have been noticed.
We hope you’ll take some time out to come and see what we have to offer at our next Mingle. It’ll be held at Dubrovnik , a quaint little Croatian restaurant set in the new SOHO KL at Solaris in Mont Kiara. There is an admission charge of RM50 inclusive of free flow drinks and finger foods. Expat Card holders receive a discount making the entry charge RM40.
Can’t wait to see you at Dubrovnik !

The Expat Mingle - 19th March 2008
Place : Little Havana, Changkat Bukit Bintang
Another exciting Mingles
Free flowing drinks, gastronomic delights, and a whole lot of conversation were served up at the Expat Mingle held at Little Havana in March. The night was filled with fun and excited chatter as many expats started to make new acquaintances throughout the city.
Despite the thunderstorm 50 managed to attend the event braving the heavy downpour in search of new found friendship and a drink on the side. Beer sponsored by Carlsberg and red and white wines were served throughout the two hour mingling session along with an array of tantalising titbits such as pastry puffs and mini tartlets.
Little Havana’s casual setting made it easy for people to table hop and for conversation to flow throughout. The Mingle occupied both the outdoor courtyard and the indoor first floor bar area. The crowd seemed to favour the cool night air picking the courtyard area over the indoor section opting to shuffle back and forth from the bar with their drinks in hand.
The Mingle was only a two hour session but many chose to stay back for more drinks and entertainment. It so happened that on the second floor there was a tango class taking place allowing newcomers to have a half an hour session free of charge. Many of the Mingle guests took advantage of this exciting tango session. The second floor was filled with laughter and dancing as everyone attempted to learn the basic steps.
All in all everyone enjoyed their time at Little Havana and we’d love to have you join us at our next Mingles night.

Hope to see you there!

The Expat Mingle - 28th February 2008
Place : Magnificent Fish & Chips Bar, Changkat Bukit Bintang
It was indeed a tantalising and fascinating two-hour mingling session at The Magnificent Fish & Chips Bar in Changkat Bukit Bintang! The Expat Group hosted its first Mingle Night on 28 February with much success. This event was to provide an opportunity for people to mix and mingle and meet new friends.
A total of 75 guests had a fantastic time enjoying delicious finger food and drinks while enjoying good conversations and music with new acquaintances from different parts of the world namely France, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Poland, Sweden, Taiwan and of course our very own Malaysian friends.
The Magnificent Fish & Chips Bar is not only known for its mouth-watering food but also for its cosy and homely ambience. All the mingling took place on the second floor which comprises a spacious area with comfortable leather sofas and a balcony. Although the mixing and mingling was only for two hours, the aroma of the scrumptious grub coming from the kitchen beckoned some to stay behind to enjoy more beers and a hearty dinner.
The night also saw a large group of guests who turned up (without registering) after hearing about it from their other friends. It just goes to show the power of word of mouth. Based on our post-event findings, we managed to polish off 18 bottles of wine and a lot of beer! I was informed that there were only 15 mugs of beer left just before the event ended. How’s that for a thirsty crowd? Some pleasant and funny conversations were exchanged as well as the usual round-up of the rugby scores within the men’s circle around the pool table.
If all this sounds too good to miss, make sure you show up for the next event.
